Zachary J. Cook is the new representative for District 56 in the state House.
Gov. Bill Richardson announced his appointment today of the Republican Cook to replace the GOP’s Dub Williams, who retired earlier this week due to health reasons. District 56 includes portions of Lincoln and Otero Counties. On the recommendation of Williams, the county commissions in both counties nominated Cook to replace the retiring representative.
Cook’s appointment is effective immediately.
“Zachary Cook is a fine attorney and well respected in the community. I am confident he will serve the people of Lincoln and Otero Counties with honor and respect as W.C. Dub Williams did for nearly 15 years,” Richardson said in a news release announcing the appointment.
Cook has been an attorney with H. John Underwood Ltd. in Ruidoso since 2004. He holds law, masters and bachelors degrees from the University of New Mexico.
He and his wife Angie live in Ruidoso.

House Republicans say they’re pleased with Richardson’s choice.
“I am looking forward to serving with Zachary Cook during the upcoming legislative session and beyond,” House Minority Leader Tom Taylor said in a news release. “I have no doubt that Zachary has big shoes to fill that have been left by Dub Williams, but I have no doubt that he will continue the tradition of excellent service to the community started by Rep. Williams.”
Minority Whip Keith Gardner said Cook “will be a great addition to the New Mexico House of Representatives.”
“I look forward to working with him and helping make the transition to a state representative as smooth as possible,” Gardner said. “I know Mr. Cook will serve the people of Lincoln and Otero Counties with as much grace and honor as Dub Williams did.”
