In conceding, McCain says it’s time for unity

John McCain said it’s time for Americans to unite during the speech he gave conceding the race to Barack Obama moments ago.

“Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. Please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that,” McCain said. “It’s natural tonight to feel some disappointment, but tomorrow, we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again. We fought as hard as we could.”

McCain said he doesn’t know what more he could have done to win the race and he wishes the outcome had been different. But he had kind words for his opponent.

“I wish Godspeed to the man who was my former opponent, and who will be my president,” McCain said.

Many in the crowd listening to McCain’s speech weren’t happy with his gracious tone toward his opponent. The boos were overpowering, for example, when McCain congratulated Obama and his “old friend” Joe Biden, Obama’s running mate.
