Honor 9/11 victims by getting involved

I can think of no better way to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks than by getting involved. Politicians and others are recalling today the spirit of community and communality the attacks inspired in us. As the years have passed, we have lost much of that. America is bogged down in a nasty presidential race and election year.

Thankfully, even John McCain and Barack Obama saw fit to put their campaigns on hold today to honor the victims of the attacks. They aren’t even running television ads today.

Here are some ways you can get involved and contribute to society:

• Find an American soldier currently in harm’s way and help support him or her by clicking here.

• There’s a hurricane about to hit Texas. Click here to contribute to disaster relief.

• If you haven’t done it already, register to vote by clicking here.

• Volunteer with a presidential or other political campaign. To find out how to help McCain, click here. For Obama, click here. Click here for independent Ralph Nader, here for Green Cynthia McKinney, here for Libertarian Bob Barr and here for Chuck Baldwin, the Constitutional Party candidate. One request: If you’re going to get involved in a campaign, help keep it clean. I’m one who believes elections should be about policy and character, but campaigns should keep it honest and respectful.

If you have any other suggestions on ways people can get involved and contribute, submit them as comments at the end of this posting.
