Heinrich internal poll has him leading

The campaign of 1st Congressional District Democratic candidate Martin Heinrich is touting an internal poll that has him leading Republican opponent Darren White by 6 percentage points.

Heinrich leads 48 percent to 42 percent in the Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research poll that was conducted for the Heinrich campaign. The survey of 450 likely voters was conducted Monday and Tuesday and has a margin of error of 4.6 percentage points.

After undecided voters are asked which candidate they are leaning toward, Heinrich’s lead drops to 5 points in the poll, 50 percent to 45 percent.

The question that was asked: “Thinking about the election for U.S. Congress in November, if the election for U.S. Congress were held today and the candidates were Democrat Martin Heinrich and Republican Darren White — for whom would you vote, Democrat Martin Heinrich or Republican Darren White?”

The most recent independent poll, a SurveyUSA poll conducted for the Washington publication Roll Call a month ago, had Heinrich leading by 5 points, 51 percent to 46 percent. That poll of 631 likely voters, conducted Aug. 26-28, has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Heinrich slams White in new ad

Meanwhile, Heinrich unveiled a new TV ad today in which he slams White. The ad states that “the wives of police officers said White endangered their husbands’ lives,” while the words “White endangered officers’ lives” flash across the screen. The ad cites an article from the Santa Fe New Mexican to back up its claim.

Here’s the ad:

White, in a news release, said Heinrich has “sunk to a new low” with the ad.

“Debating issues is one thing, but Martin Heinrich airing a television ad suggesting that I would endanger the lives of police officers crosses the line and is a despicable and sad example of ‘say-anything-to-win’ politics,” White said. “I have dedicated my life to serving in law enforcement and I know the pain of losing an officer in the line of duty under my command. I’m very disappointed that Martin Heinrich has sunk to this low.”

The White release pointed out that White has been endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police and the Albuquerque Police Officer’s Association.
