Dunn wins; Tinsley, Greer also qualify for ballot

Aubrey Dunn Jr. won today’s Second Congressional District Republican preprimary contest, but C. Earl Greer and Ed Tinsley also qualified for the ballot.

Dunn received the support of 40 delegates, or 30 percent, while Greer and Tinsley each received 33 votes, or 24 percent.

Monty Newman narrowly missed qualifying for the ballot, receiving 25 votes, or 18.5 percent of the vote. Terry Marquardt and Greg Sowards each received two votes, or about 1 percent.

Dunn had this to say about his victory:

“I’m grateful to have the support of grassroots Republicans across Southern New Mexico, and I look forward to taking on the Democrat candidate in November,” he said in a news release.

Greer’s campaign, meanwhile, said in a news release that he won a drawing with Tinsley and will appear second behind Dunn on the June ballot. Tinsley will appear third.

“I am extremely pleased with the outcome of this convention,” Greer said in the release. “The voters of this district believe in my ability to keep New Mexico’s values and interests close to heart while serving in Washington.”

Greer’s communications director, Timera Drake, called Greer “the people’s candidate.”

“He doesn’t consider this a hobby; he considers it a sacred trust between him and the people of the second district. He isn’t financing his campaign with hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money to ‘see’ if he can win. All of his money is from true supporters who believe in his abilities to serve New Mexico faithfully,” she said.

Update, 4:45 p.m.

Tinsley said in a news release that he’s grateful for the delegates who put their support behind him today.

“I look forward to the primary race ahead,” he said. “I will continue to run a campaign based on the issues that matter to the people that live in our district.”

His campaign spokeswoman, Sarah Lenti, said voters reaffirmed what the campaign has been saying: “Ed Tinsley has the diversity of experience and leadership ability that Southern New Mexico voters are looking for.”

“We will continue to run a positive, issue-based campaign,” she said. “We’ve known from the start that this would be a tight race. The race is starting out as a virtual dead heat with three candidates on the ballot.”
