Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez has announced that she’s seeking re-election this year.
Martinez was first elected district attorney in 1996. During her tenure, according to a news release announcing her re-election bid, she has implemented a successful victim assistance program in the state. She has also been recognized as a strong advocate for the elderly in implementing the Communities Against Senior Exploitation program, which attempts to protect the elderly from predators and scam artists.
She’s also been recognized as a strong advocate in animal-abuse cases.
“Her tough stances on repeat offenders, violent offenders and child-abuse cases have given her statewide recognition as one of the toughest and most successful prosecutors in New Mexico,” the release states. “Her success in the area of child abuse prosecution has earned her recognition as a national expert in child abuse.”
Martinez has received many state and national awards in her 22 years as a prosecutor, including a 2008 Crossing Borders Award given by the Border Learning Conference Committee, the Hispanic Triumphant Border Award, Heart Magazine’s 2007 Woman of the Year award and the state’s 1999 Legal Impact Prosecutor of the Year award. She was a recipient of the governor’s award for outstanding New Mexico women in 1997. Martinez has also been recognized by the City of Las Cruces for her assistance with successful child abuse legislation in 2005.
