State Rep. Jeff Steinborn, D-Las Cruces, announced today that he won’t run for the Second Congressional District seat being vacated by Steve Pearce, but will seek re-election next year.
Doña Ana County Commissioner Kent Evans, a Republican, is the only other candidate who has entered the race for the New Mexico House District 37 seat.
“There are many challenges before us in state government and our local community that need addressing,” Steinborn said in a news release. “Since being elected to the state House, I have played a leadership role in working to meet our state’s health-care needs, instituting important ethics and lobbying reform and bringing a critically needed focus to our border region. I would like to continue this work.”
Steinborn’s news release included a quote from Gov. Bill Richardson praising the representative.
“Jeff Steinborn has been a highly effective state representative, helping to pass legislation to secure the border and assisting me as a valuable member of my ethics reform task force,”
Steinborn, in the news release, said four of his bills were signed into law during his first legislative session earlier this year. He said he secured $2 million in funding for the county, and pointed out that he helped draft the reform of the state’s housing authority system that was approved this year and served on the governor’s ethics reform task force. He said he has held eight community meetings in the district since being elected last November.
“Through extensive community meetings, constituent surveys and communication during the legislative session, I hope to have been a true representative of the people and an accessible state representative,” Steinborn said. “There is much more to be done, and I look forward to working with everyone in House District 37 to continue to make our community and state the best it can be.”
