Edwards begins organizing for New Mexico Caucus

With less than two months until New Mexico Democrats will pick their nominee for president on Feb. 5, John Edwards is beginning to mobilize his supporters in the Land of Enchantment.

Edwards’ national political director David Medina sent an e-mail to supporters in New Mexico on Wednesday evening inviting them to a conference call on Dec. 12 to begin organizing. Those who are interested in participating can RSVP by clicking here.

“During this call, we will talk about our ‘Road Trip to One America’ strategy, which is helping to match volunteers with important key early states, and we’ll also discuss our plan for victory in the New Mexico caucuses on February 5,” Medina wrote.

Edwards is the first of the major Democratic presidential candidates – including Gov. Bill Richardson – to inform supporters via e-mail that he is beginning to organize for the New Mexico Caucus. As reported today by the Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico’s presidential caucus isn’t getting the same attention during this election cycle that it received in 2004 because a number of other states have caught on to the idea of moving up their caucus and primary dates to have more influence in the nominating process.

Richardson is focusing all his attention on Iowa and New Hampshire and, to a lesser extend, Nevada.

New Mexico’s Republicans aren’t expected to have much say at all in their party’s presidential nominating process. Unlike the state’s Democrats, the GOP opted against moving up its caucus, so the state’s Republicans won’t vote for their presidential nominee until June.

Republicans in about half the nation’s states are voting for their nominee on or before Feb. 5, so the nomination will likely be finalized on that day.
