Joy will seek to replace Miyagishima on city council

Lawrence Joy became today the first person to formally announce his candidacy for the open District 6 seat on the Las Cruces City Council.

An election will be held Jan. 15 to replace Ken Miyagishima, who was elected mayor earlier this month. Several others have said they’re considering running, but none have officially entered the race.

Joy announced his candidacy today in a news release.

“Recently I shared with a few people that I was giving strong consideration to running for the open seat in Las Cruces City Council District 6 after our city councilor became the new mayor of Las Cruces. Since that time I have received very positive encouragement and feedback from people that live in District 6 and from numerous local officials,” he said. “My message of encouraging local participation and feedback from our community is hitting a hot button with people all over Las Cruces, especially City Council District 6, where this idea continues to build on the work of our previous councilor.”

Joy talked about building cooperation with the private sector and New Mexico State University to enhance quality of life.

“I have lived and worked in Las Cruces for 25 years and have great working relationships with members of the Las Cruces City Council, judicial branch, county officials, local business owners, local state Legislators and NMSU officials,” he said. “I’m running for Las Cruces City Council to encourage people to work with each other to improve our wonderful city. I am an independent candidate with no financial support from any special interest groups or large campaign contributors.”

Joy pledged to “encourage local participation and feedback from our community on all activities in the Las Cruces City Council and make all records public, along with all information possible, so the people of this district have complete access to the city council process.”

Joy is the owner of Advanced Target Marketing, Inc., a direct mail advertising firm, and is the voice of NMSU’s marching band. He has been married to Nancy Joy, a professional musician and music teacher, for more than 21 years, and they have lived in Precinct 68 for 12 years.

Joy has twice run unsuccessfully against state Rep. Antonio Lujan, D-Las Cruces.
