Small joins race for open city council seat

Nathan Small has announced his candidacy to replace District 4 representative Steve Trowbridge on the Las Cruces City Council.

Trowbridge isn’t seeking re-election, and Small joins Steven Montaño and Isaac Chavez in the contest to replace him.

Las Cruces is at a crossroads,” Small said in a news release. “We can continue business as usual where we react to events as they happen to us. Or, we can rise to the occasion and embrace the opportunities of our growing city: investing in existing neighborhoods, carefully planning new ones and building a healthy community that all of us can share.”

Small, 25, is a member of the Doña Ana County Planning and Zoning Commission and is active in several community groups. He is employed in the Las Cruces office of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance. An avid outdoorsman, he also helps care for and train horses at Shining Heart Farms.

Small said a shared sense of community is important to him, and said that begins with open government and public participation in city decision-making. Solid infrastructure, safe neighborhoods, high-performance schools and a balanced approach to growth and development are central, he said.

“I’m a native New Mexican and love our natural lands and people. Conservation, renewable energy and careful planning are essential to a prosperous and viable future for our city,” he said. “I’m eager to join the people of my district in taking on these important tasks.”
