Homans campaigns for tax in Las Cruces

How many times do you think a New Mexico cabinet secretary has stood on a street corner 300 miles from the state capitol? I don’t know either, but I thought it was noteworthy that Economic Development Secretary Rick Homans spent the day here campaigning for the spaceport tax.

I don’t know much more than that. Voter turnout in Radium Springs continues to be impressive. As of 6:30 p.m., 295 of approximately 1,400 voters in that area had voted, which is about 21 percent. They live closer to the spaceport than those in Las Cruces, but it’s also a fairly liberal and pro-environment area, so it’s not clear how those votes will swing. My guess is they’ll lean toward opposing the tax.

The county plans to release early voting numbers – about 3,800 votes – shortly after 7 p.m., so check back here then. More than 65 percent of the early votes were cast by Democrats, for whatever that’s worth. Just under 50 percent of registered voters in Doña Ana County are Democrats.
