Chávez is a prominent Democrat who is currently raising money for a potential 2010 gubernatorial run against Lt. Gov. Diane Denish. He has also expressed his interest in the Senate seat, but has said he won’t run against Domenici.
He had been set up for a potential run against Wilson for Domenici’s seat after the senator retires, but many analysts agree with Chávez that Wilson, who was re-elected last year by 861 votes out of more than 211,000, is weakened to the point that she is no longer a valid candidate for Senate and may not be able to hold her House seat.
