Cockfighting ban on fast track through House

A statewide ban on cockfighting appears to be on the fast track through the House, which has approved it before.

Senate Bill 10, sponsored by Sen. Mary Jane Garcia, D-Doña Ana, will be heard Saturday by the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee. What’s unique is that members of the House Judiciary Committee will listen in on the hearing so that they can quickly vote on the measure during their own hearing on Monday without listening to testimony.

That will move the bill to the House floor as early as next week, assuming both committees approve it, which is likely.

Saturday’s hearing will take place approximately 30 minutes after the end of the House floor session.

The cockfighting ban passed the Senate earlier this month on a vote of 31-11.

KRWG Radio has a story on the air today examining the cockfighting debate. I was interviewed for the story, which is airing on public radio in the Las Cruces and Albuquerque areas. You can listen to it by clicking here.
