Group holds GISD school board candidate forum

Candidates for seats on the Gadsden Independent School District Board of Education will share their views during a forum next week.

The event, sponsored by the South Valley Alliance and New Mexico Progressive Alliance for Community Empowerment, will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the volunteer fire station in Anthony, located at 1055 West O’Hara Road.

Sometime after that, the groups will announce endorsements.

Because of the 2005 recall of four of five Gadsden board members, all seats are up for grabs on Feb. 6.

In District 1, incumbent Manuela Huerta faces Luz Vargas-Troncoso, who was recalled in 2005 but wants her seat back. Rodolfo Franco will challenge incumbent Jennifer Viramontes for the District 2 seat.

Maria Saenz is running unopposed to retain her District 3 seat. She was the only board member not recalled in 2005.

Elva Flores is challenging incumbent Daniel Castillo for the District 4 seat. Craig Ford and Robert Zinmaster are challenging incumbent Charles Gonnell for the District 5 seat.

A previous version of this posting listed an incorrect address for the forum and did not include one of the sponsors.
