The tumor removed from Doña Ana County Commissioner Kent Evans’ colon earlier this week was malignant, but the cancer had not spread and doctors are confident they removed it all, his wife Anna Mae said.
As an additional precaution, Evans will undergo chemotherapy, she said.
“It’s very encouraging. It looks like he’ll be just fine,” Anna Mae Evans said. “The tumor was self-contained. It hasn’t been aggressive.”
Kent Evans, 66, was hospitalized last week after experiencing pain in his abdomen. Doctors discovered the tumor while removing his gallbladder.
Anna Mae Evans said she is hopeful her husband will be able to leave the hospital on Saturday.
Kent Evans is a Republican who represents District 4. He has a reputation for working with anyone – Democrat, Republican or otherwise – and is well-liked by most.
Anna Mae Evans said the outpouring of support since her husband was hospitalized has been overwhelming. She even received a call earlier this week from U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M.
“It’s wonderful how much people think of him,” she said.
