The Internet is abuzz with speculation that Hillary Clinton won’t run for president following a conversation at a recent Bill Richardson event.
Apparently, longtime Clinton confidant Susan Thomases recently held a meet-and-greet in New York for New Mexico’s governor. According to The New York Observer’s Politicker, two guests claim Thomases said at the event that Clinton isn’t running for president.
However, Thomases says that isn’t what she said.
Here’s how it allegedly happened: Richardson was “making his big presidential pitch to guests,” the Politcker reported, when he interrupted himself to apologize to Thomases for putting her in an uncomfortable position because of her relationship with Clinton. The guests told the Politicker that Thomases said Richardson need not worry because Clinton isn’t running for president.
“The way she put it was, (Clinton’s) husband thinks she’s running, many of her friends think she’s running, but she’s not running,” one of the guests told the Politicker. “It was almost like an atom bomb dropped on the room. … My jaw just fell to the floor.”
Thomases told the Politicker she didn’t say that.
“I said, ‘she’s not running; she’s running for Senate, and that’s what she’s doing, period.’ There was nothing awkward about it, because she’s running for the Senate, which is something you all know. It was nothing new. I just repeated the same old,” she said.
So did the guests misunderstand, or is Thomases just covering her tracks after the fact? I’ve asked the governor’s office what his take is on all this. I’ll let you know if I get a response.
