Gearing Up for the 2016 Primary Election

(En Español) Even though we are still working on the February 2nd Las Cruces Public School Capital Improvements Tax election, and preparing to help with the March 1st municipal elections in Sunland Park, Anthony, Mesilla and Hatch, we are also gearing up for the 2016 Primary Election.

Filing day for Primary Election candidates is Tuesday, March 8, 2016 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. A person who wants to become a candidate must be affiliated with the Republican or Democrat party and reside in the district of the office for which he or she is a candidate as of January 25, 2016. That was the day that the Governor issued the Primary Election Proclamation.

The office to file with is either the County Clerk’s office or the Secretary of State’s office. Those who will file in the Doña Ana County Clerk’s office include; State Representative districts that are completely within Doña Ana County, State Senate districts that are completely within Doña Ana County, County Commission districts 2, 4 and 5, County Clerk, and County Treasurer.

Anyone wishing to be a candidate for State Representative districts whose boundaries include multiple counties, State Senate districts whose boundaries include multiple counties, District Attorneys, and any other state or federal offices are required to file with the Secretary of State’s Office in Santa Fe. Please contact our office if the position you are interested in running for is not included in these lists.

Candidates filing for state offices need to file nominating petitions. Candidates filing for a county office must pay a $50 fee. At 5:00 p.m. those candidates who filed in the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office will draw cards for ballot position.

If you would like to be a write-in candidate for the Primary Election you need to file with the required filing officer on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

We encourage everyone interested in running for office, or interested in helping someone else run for office, to read the candidate guide put together by the Secretary of State’s Office. In it you will find the number of required petition signatures and many other requirements and deadlines. You can get access to this guide through our website
