Iowa’s big winner – Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum

Regardless of whether he ends up technically winning the Iowa caucuses, Rick Santorum is the big winner of the night.

But that raises questions: Can Santorum put together a credible national campaign? Or was he simply the flavor of the week in a wildly shifting GOP primary at the right moment to win the first state’s contest?

At the time of publication of this post, Santorum leads Mitt Romney by four votes (you read that right) out of more than 120,000 cast with only a fraction of 1 percent left to be tallied. You might find final results here.

Sarah Lenti has already predicted in a column for NMPolitics.net that Romney will be the GOP nominee, and many national pundits agree. Regardless, Santorum certainly makes things interesting.

On to New Hampshire.

A prior version of this posting incorrectly stated that only 60,000 votes were cast.
