Fleming announces candidacy for mayor

Newspaper carrier Michael Fleming has announced his candidacy for Las Cruces mayor.

The deliverer of the Las Cruces Sun-News wrote in an e-mail that he’s running on a conservative platform and is seeking “good stewardship” of taxpayers’ money and a realization “that the citizens of Las Cruces are the employers.”

Fleming is 51 and has lived in Las Cruces since 1992. He’s been a newspaper carrier for more than 19 years and said being a private contractor has taught him that “financial discipline is an absolute must.”

He was born and raised in Alamogordo and graduated from the N.M. School for the Visually Handicapped as valedictorian in 1979. He earned bachelor’s degrees in English and Spanish from Western New Mexico University in 1984.

Fleming is one of three challengers to incumbent Ken Miyagishima in the Nov. 8 mayoral race. The others are District 2 Councilor Dolores Connor and Michael Ray Huerta.
