Haussamen named one of Politico’s ‘50 to watch’

Heath Haussamen

The well-read D.C. publication Politico has named me one of 50 politicos across the nation  “who will be a force to reckon with in the 2012 cycle.”

Those selected include consultants, fundraisers, candidates, television personalities, tweeters and four bloggers. I’m one of the four.

“Starting an all-politics website five years ago was not without risk for Heath Haussamen. Frustrated by budget cuts and what he calls ‘the dumbing down of news,’ he quit his newspaper job at the Las Cruces Sun-News in New Mexico with no real sense of whether the online venture would succeed,” a Politico article about me states.

“Now – supported by advertising and donations – stands out in the Land of Enchantment for its smart, nonpartisan political coverage and analysis,” it states. “Haussamen still runs the multilayered site on his own.”

“In 2008, he traversed the state covering the presidential race and gained a reputation for thoroughness and speed,” the article states. “Expect more of that in 2012, as the increasingly diverse state hosts open Senate and House contests, in addition to the presidential race.”

Politico says its intent with the “50 politicos to watch” feature was to take a look “at the new generation of candidates, bloggers, fundraisers, consultants and media standouts who will be a force to reckon with in the 2012 cycle.”

  1. Congratulations on a duly earned award, justly yours, as opposed to those awards arranged for self and cohort to which we’ve become accustomed.

  2. Good job. I started following NM politics and issues over the past year. I check the page every day. Much more accurate, factual, and neutral the other blogger in NM. I stopped reading his about 6 months ago when I realized his predictions are fantasy. I look forward to reading your updates for years to come.

  3. New Mexico is lucky to have such an excellent political blog! Congratulations! It is the best in the West!

  4. A well deserved recognition Heath. It has been great to see your site grow from the primary source of political journalism in southern New Mexico, to now the national source of political news reporting in our state.

  5. I bookmarked “The Brooklyn Politics” blog, in case I want a good east coast perspective. The Virginia one looks good too.

  6. Congratulations. Well deserved.

  7. One more thing, Heath, since you are to become a big shot, could you fix the back button?

  8. I guess that means more censorship and more stringent moderating on this site. Heath has already pulled and article from the far Left. I hope he does not plan to only censor the Left. I also hope there will be less infighting among the commentators on the site.
Congratulations, Heath, no one deserves acknowledgment more than you especially since this is one of my daily stops.

  9. @ D Foley,

I could not agree with you more. But sadly TV news is sensationalism at its finest and that is what the other blogger gives them.

    Heath, Congratulations.

  10. Heath it is nice to see someone get the recognition they deserve for the hard work they do. Unlike other so called bloggers who use made up sources you have always taken the high road. I hope all the others are watching? I also hope the television stations that use the other folks will take notice to what a true professional you are.

Congrats to you and your family.

  11. Congratulations Heath! You are a fine news reporter and wise beyond your years to distance yourself from the Sun News. Keep up the honest reporting!
