Martinez spokesman fired over DWI arrest

Susana Martinez

Republican gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez’s campaign spokesman was arrested for DWI early Sunday morning, and he was fired later in the day.

Raj Shah was arrested shortly after midnight near the intersection of San Mateo and Osuna in Albuquerque, online court records indicate. Shah, 25, was charged with aggravated DWI and careless driving.

As of this morning, he remains in jail on a $5,000 surety bond, online booking records indicate.

“Raj Shah was arrested for DWI early this morning and was immediately terminated,” Ryan Cangiolosi, Martinez campaign manager, said in a Sunday statement.

Shah moved to New Mexico from Connecticut to work for the Martinez campaign earlier this month. He has worked in the past for former U.S. Senate candidate Rob Simmons and the Republican National Committee.

  1. This is an opportune time to remind everybody that George Bush had a DUI and this fact was well known before he was “selected”.

  2. Seems Martinez is having some difficulties moving up to a major league campaign. Too bad her other former opponents don’t seem to be helping her out. Perhaps Turner could be helping her with PR?

  3. In all parts of the country I have lived, west, east, middle, southwest, I have never seen so may DWI’s in one place. What is it about NM? It seems as though everyone charged with DUI, already has several previous charges for the same. Is it the judges who let people off again and again? And, interestingly, it is not usually college age kids, it is people old enough to know better.

  4. Chimayo,

I am a native, I am where I came from; a state with more than its share of drunk drivers.

Hemingway’s argument was that this guy was more likely to end up with a DUI because he was from out of state.
His/her argument is nonsense on its face. I just pointed that out. I wrote nothing to be ashamed of.

  5. As a famous Greek philosopher stated :“The vine bears three kinds of grapes: the first of pleasure, the second of intoxication, the third of disgust”

  6. It is unfortunate. Maybe Ms. Martinez should have hire a local New Mexican to be her campaign spokesman not a total outsider that she didn’t know at all.
