VIDEO: Heinrich co-sponsors bill to increase campaign finance transparency

U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., is touting today the fact that he’s a cosponsor of major transparency legislation.

Heinrich is a cosponsor of the DISCLOSE Act, which a news release from his office said would “establish the toughest-ever disclosure requirements for election-related spending by big oil corporations, Wall Street banks and other special interests.”

“The bill would increase transparency and disclosure of political spending so voters know who is trying to influence them in elections, keep foreign companies from influencing America’s elections, and ensure that corporations that took money in the Bush bailout can’t turn around and spend that money in elections,” the release states.

The legislation is a direct response to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Citizens United v. FEC that corporate spending on elections can’t be limited.

Here’s video of Heinrich speaking in favor of the DISCLOSE Act:

The news comes a day after NMPolitics.net reported that Heinrich had not yet joined the other two House members from New Mexico in becoming members of the bipartisan Congressional Transparency Caucus.
