Barela raises $232K in first quarter of 2010

Jon Barela

Republican 1st Congressional District candidate Jon Barela raised $232,188.05 in the first three months of the year, making it his best fundraising quarter to date.

Barela raised $203,688.05 from individuals, $23,500 from political actions committees and $5,000 from a political party committee, according to the report he filed today with the Federal Election Commission.

From January to March, Barela’s campaign spent $55,014.57. The campaign ended the reporting period with $392,359.18 on hand.

That’s far short of the $1,044,742.42 that Democratic U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, the 1st District’s representative, had on hand at the end of the reporting period. Heinrich’s report, filed earlier today, indicated that he raised $300,233.83 during the first quarter of the year and spent $90,122.64.

But Barela’s fundraising during the last three months is much better than what he did during any quarter in 2009. From October to December, for example, Barela raised $113,070.

To date, Barela has raised $526,097.82 for his campaign. Heinrich has raised $1,385,121.10.

The other candidate in the race, the Green Party’s Alan Woodruff, has yet to file a report with the FEC.

Update, 1:45 p.m.

“Each day on the campaign trail, I hear the rallying cry for a new way forward in Washington, and it’s coming from Republicans, Democrats and independents alike,” Barela said in a news release. “ I’m honored to receive the support of so many New Mexicans – from varying backgrounds and throughout the First Congressional District – who are eager to stand with me in our fight to stop the wasteful spending, high taxes, and misplaced priorities in Congress today.”
