The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees announced today that it had endorsed Brian Colón in the lieutenant governor’s race.

On Wednesday evening, AFSCME New Mexico’s political action committee voted 5-0 to endorse Colón for, according to an AFSCME news release, “his understanding of the struggles New Mexicans are going through because he has been through hard times himself.”

“Mr. Colón knows it is irresponsible for Santa Fe to balance the budget on the backs of New Mexico’s working families. The workers are the backbone of this state and we know Brian is the right person to be their voice,” state employee Mary Gustin said in the AFSCME release.

The union represents more than 12,000 city, county, state and university employees, along with home childcare professionals, so the endorsement could provide a significant boost to Colón’s campaign.

Colón said he is honored by the endorsement.

“This election is about improving the lives of New Mexicans across our state by helping rebuild our economy and investing in our people,” he said.
