After seven years as a newspaper reporter and editor, I left behind a stable paycheck in May 2006 to follow a dream I’d been developing for years. I started a news Web site, Heath Haussamen on New Mexico Politics, and created CrucesNews.com, Las Cruces’ home page.

The Internet is revolutionizing the way we get our news, and I wanted to help define the change. Through the Internet, news is more immediate and comprehensive. The format allows readers to be participants instead of consumers. I think it’s an exciting time.

In addition, I keep my eyes open for unique opportunities to have a voice in the conversation about the role of government in our society. I am a reporter for the New Mexico Independent and also contribute weekly to the Diary of a Mad Voter blog published by the Denver Post’s Politics West and the independent Web site NewWest.net.
